Gen. Victor E. Renuart is the Commander of the United States Northern Command and of the North America Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). His command units rely on space assets for nearly all aspects of their work. He placed demands on the space community to provide the space assets necessary for the safety and security of the homeland. The United States is under constant risk of a large-scale natural disaster, and the military must be ready to provide support to emergency services. Other threats faced are the same as those during the Cold War, but may be carried out in different approaches. As part of a layered defense, the armed forces and civilians must be adequately prepared for a crisis. Space assets are a critical component to a layered defense and Gen. Renuart called on the commercial space community to meet evolving military demands quickly and inexpensively.
