Fostering Innovation

S. Pete Worden, Ph.D. moderated the panel discussion on fostering innovation, featuring Maj. Gen. Curtis M. Bedke, Mr. Douglas A. Comstock, and Brig. Gen. Duane W. Deal. The panel suggested that innovation is a matter of "nature and nurture," not just individual geniuses. Innovation requires creating a fostering environment and establishing processes that can be learned and repeated. In order to achieve this, agencies must be willing to truly accept risk and accept the fact that something may fail. Mr. Comstock discussed NASA's role in fostering innovation through recognition and awards, Centennial challenges, the Innovative Partnership Program, and commercial space. Panelists stated that innovation occurs by bringing together innovative people and the right environment, seeking and listening for challenges, and "keeping your eye on the ball." The panelists were asked how to best establish a culture of innovation. Those involved in innovation need to be interested in it for the sake of creating new technology, and not just looking for a promotion. Additionally, agency leaders need to believe in innovation projects and create processes that allow people to pursue good ideas.
